One of FitFeud's most popular features, something we call, Competition Chat is a Twitter-like messaging system that allows FitFeud competitors to post short messages to everyone else in the competition. When you log into FitFeud, you immediately see the new messages your competitors have posted. Here are some examples of the types of things people say from a recent walking competition we launched for a client:
"This is fun!"
"Walking is Green team's business and business is good."
"These shoes are made for walking and that's just what they'll do.....you know the rest!! Go Blue Team"
"Walk to work, walk at lunch, and walk the floor?! Miles rack up quickly."
As you can see, people are posting all sorts of messages. Competitive jabs, tips, funny quotes... There are some key reasons why we think this is so poplar.
Simplicity: If a feature isn't simple, people won't use it. It takes mere seconds to scan the Competition Chat messages and post something yourself. Indeed, every part of FitFeud is made to be simple and easy to use. It would be sort of ironic of a system that is built to motivate people to be more active to require lots of time in front of a computer to use.
Familiarity: With over 400 million people on Facebook, and growing millions on Twitter and other social networks, these sorts of short bursts of communication are more and more how we communicate online. People are used to how this works, so they use it without having to even think about it.
Connectivity: By nature, people want to feel connected to their peers and part of a group. The Competition Chat feature unites everyone in the competition and let's each individual tap into and engage with the entire group.
